Conversation recall: skin color

White* boy picks up Filipino* girl (a friend) at the subway stop in Brooklyn.

Filipino girl: I realized I was in a different part of the city when I was the only non-black* person at the end of a particular subway line.

White boy: Your skin color is almost black.

Filipino girl's jaw drops. Silence. Both exit the car.

Filipino girl: You know you shouldn't say that to a Filipino person. You know they have a complex about being light-skinned.

Not sure if this conversation was more disturbing for the Filipino girl or the White boy or someone else who could have heard this conversation.
