Dr. Seuss = 102 years old

Dr. Seuss Birthday
Originally uploaded by smhyla.

Today, several volunteers, including me, read Dr. Seuss books to elementary kids. Read Across America Day is in honor of Dr. Seuss. When I went to school (if I can remember that far back), there was no such day or maybe I just missed every March 2nd. Mr. Geisel (AKA Dr. Seuss) would be 102 years old today. I know his real last name, since he bequeathed a hefty amount of $$ to build a spaceship-looking library at my college (Geisel Library).

Even though I only read 15 minutes each to 2 different classes of 4th grade students, it was very fulfilling. Although 30 minutes may sound short, it was a good 30 minutes that I wish could be longer. The kids were sincerely interested in having us read to them. They asked several questions. I'd like to do it more often, but having a job hampers that idea. Besides, the kids might appreciate it less. This kind of experience sometimes make me think that I should either take up teaching/tutoring and/or have a kid or two of my own. I think the former is more likely than the latter, even though my patience/tolerance would need some improving of course.

Anyhow, I've been out of the volunteering mode until now. I'm excited to reignite that passion of mine. On that note, the season for 5Ks for good causes have begun. I will be spearheading my own team, so there will be more info to come. If anyone else in the blogosphere has some good cause, please share.
